Murcia Promotes Equality and Human Rights in Classrooms through the “Weaving Citizenship for Equality” Program and SAY Project

In order to implement the artistic education methodologies of the SAY program the CIVES Foundation collaborated with the Murcia City Council and the non-governmental organization Spanish Education League through the "Weaving Citizenship for Equality in Murcia" program—an initiative aimed at promoting peace, human rights, and gender equality in three primary schools within the municipality.
In one of the three primary schools, the CEIP La Fuensanta, two workshops were held that, through the sending of postcards, sought to raise awareness among students about the importance of respect for human rights, the peaceful resolution of conflicts, and especially gender equality with the work of the photograph “Hartas” by the artist Julieta Dorin, a portrait of a International Women's Day´s strike in Madrid.
During the implementation, the participating girls and boys have explored topics such as equal opportunities, mutual respect, and the importance of recognizing and combating gender stereotypes. Additionally, a lot of focus has been made on helping students acquire the social and emotional competencies necessary to become change agents in their communities.
“Education in equality and human rights is essential to building a more just and peaceful society. This program has not only allowed the students to reflect on these issues but has also provided them with practical tools to apply them in their daily lives,” highlighted Mireia Ruiz, an educator who has carried out the project in the centers.
The SAY program has been received with enthusiasm by both the students and the teaching staff of the participating educational center. The activities have been designed to be inclusive and participatory, ensuring that all boys and girls can express their ideas and learn collaboratively.
The success of this initiative sets a precedent for the incorporation of similar programs in more educational centers in the municipality, with the aim of continuing to promote a culture of peace and equality in future generations.
