Sending solidarity through postcards

Landscape solidarnost 5

On March 21st 2022, on the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, pupils in Slovenia sent more than 450 postcards with message of solidarity to unknown recipients. Elementary and high schools across Slovenia joined the campaign. Every message sent was unique but all encompassed values of friendship, respect, peace and solidarity. In high school from the town Velenje, some pupils expressed empathy with Ukrainians who are forced to leave their homes, while others underlined the need to take care of our environment and nature.

Messages were well received and several recipients responded back. One of the messages read: “We don’t have to be afraid for the future if we have such positive youth. I hope there are many more like you”. Another one thanked for the message and expressed hope for positive future for everyone without war, hunger and with clean and healthy environment. One of the replies was also from Slovenian Ombudsman for Human Rights who said that message he received gives hope and optimism that it is possible to overcome challenges with youth. He noticed genuine wish in the message of brighter future for everyone to which he added:  “This wish will come true if you are active, you are aware that you have rights and that you also have the right to say what you want, what you desire and what you demand.”

Replies still keep on coming and it’s amazing to observe knitting of this solidarity networks between people who do not know each other but have the same hopes for the future: with peace, friendship and lots of solidarity.
